Potential strengths

Separate firmness adjustment can reduce the need for couples to agree on one shared setting.
Airpedic advertises additional lumbar-zone adjustment beyond ordinary left/right firmness.

Potential tradeoffs

Adjustable-air systems add pumps, hoses, chambers and controls that do not exist in a conventional foam or innerspring mattress.

Airpedic vs Sleep Number

Airpedic explicitly positions itself as a Sleep Number alternative and publishes direct model pairings. Sleep Number's current smart-bed system also allows side-specific firmness adjustment and uses Responsive Air technology on supported models.
